Blizzard Entertainment has announced the release of Mac OS X-native versions of the game StarCraft and its add-on expansion pack, StarCraft: Brood War. Mac gamers who use Mac OS X 10.1 or later can now play the game using a Carbonized application.
StarCraft is Blizzard’s enormously popular real-time strategy game that puts players in control of one of three different spacefaring species: the heavily armored Terrans, the Zerg hive-mind, or the technologically advanced and psionically powerful Protoss. Brood War continues the saga by incorporating new story elements, new units and new environments on which to fight.
StarCraft and its add-on pack both feature extensive single-player missions and campaigns, but the secret to the series’ enduring popularity has been its online play elements, which are enjoyed the world over by users of Blizzard’s own Battle.net online service.
If you already own StarCraft, StarCraft: Brood War, or the StarCraft Battle Chest and you’d like to download StarCraft or StarCraft: Brood War for Mac OS X, simply visit the Blizzard Entertainment Web site and download the new patches.
StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War are the first two Blizzard games to be updated to play natively on Mac OS X 10.1 or higher. Blizzard has not announced specific plans to update any other games, but the company referred to its “continuing support of Macintosh gamers” with the release of these two updates — hopefully that support will continue with Mac OS X updates of more recent releases like Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
If you’re a Diablo II player, you may want to be aware of the release of a new Macintosh patch for Diablo II. The new 1.09d patch purportedly fixes a problem that would cause Mac users to be kicked out of chat on Battle.net at random intervals. Please bear in mind that unlike the StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War patches mentioned above, this update does not add Mac OS X native support for Diablo II.
Separate updates for users of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction and the original Diablo II are available.

It would appear that help is on the way for those who have blazed through all three campaigns in the original StarCraft and crave more. All previous races are back in Blizzard’s add-on, Brood War, covering a terrific plot, fresh missions and the requisite new units and buildings that you would expect from such an expansion. Brood War picks up smoothly from where StarCraft left off, and many characters and locations are carried over. The plot again is in the three-episode format and is even more immersive than the original. The missions are well designed and vary greatly from the “find the enemy base and destroy it” genre, as did the original.
One main issue addressed in Brood War is the balancing of units among the three races. Debates have gone on for a while now on how to balance one races air power versus another’s, and so on. For the most part it seems that the Terran and Protoss units got a little help, and the Zerg units have generally been “weakened” by making it a little tougher to amass large numbers of powerful units to throw at the enemy.
